About Gerald

Gerald (Gerry) Kandestin leads the firm's bankruptcy, insolvency and corporate restructuring practice, along with secured lending, security enforcement and related litigation. He has acted for major banks, asset-based lenders and factoring companies in documenting and enforcing secured transactions, and was part of a special committee of the Insolvency Institute of Canada that advised the federal government on amendments to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. Kandestin represented the bankruptcy trustee in Peoples Department Stores' precedent-setting case before the Supreme Court of Canada on directors' duties in the zone of insolvency, and has acted in major restructurings including AbitibiBowater, Bloom Lake/Cliffs and the Montréal, Maine & Atlantic Canada Co. cross-border insolvency. He is a former director and secretary of the Insolvency Institute of Canada, a past president of the Lord Reading Law Society, and a former two-term treasurer of the Montréal Bar.
