About Gawtam
Gawtam Tharmakumaran is an associate at Sutherland Law with a litigation practice touching on real estate disputes, mortgage enforcement, Tarion warranty claims, shareholder conflicts, and regulatory compliance and defence matters. Before joining the firm he worked at a boutique Toronto litigation practice, where he carried his own files early in his career, and he has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Justice, and the Small Claims Court, along with administrative tribunals such as the Licence Appeal Tribunal. He holds an Honours B.A. from the University of Toronto and a law degree from City St. George's, University of London, where he placed first in a case competition that led to a placement at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner. He also completed a summer program at Oxford focused on advocacy and commercial law. After returning to Canada, he secured his Certificate of Qualification through the National Committee on Accreditation before being called to the bar in Ontario in 2025. He speaks English and Tamil.
