She earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1997 and a Master of Arts in History in 1998 from Memorial University of Newfoundland, then a law degree from the University of New Brunswick, where she received the Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers prize and the Blake Lynch prize in criminal law and evidence.
