About Derek

Derek Palaschuk spent almost thirty years working in accounting and finance before joining Murphy Battista LLP in 2015, completing articles and being called to the bar in 2016. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Derek earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan in 1986 and became a Chartered Accountant in 1988 after articling with Price Waterhouse in Calgary. Later work with Price Waterhouse in Hong Kong and Beijing preceded a move into industry, serving as chief financial officer for three Chinese-based technology companies listed on the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange. During more than fifteen years working in China, Derek was responsible for over US$1 billion in initial public offerings, equity issues, financings, and mergers and acquisitions, and served as audit committee chairman for a Hong Kong listed company. Derek earned an LLB from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC in 1994. That legal work focuses on economic torts, negligence and commercial disputes, and also includes acting as pro bono counsel for people who cannot afford a lawyer.
