About Derek

Derek B. Brett is a cross-border lawyer practising in Nova Scotia, Florida and the District of Columbia, and is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court and several federal appellate and district courts. He earned his Juris Doctor with honours from Florida State University College of Law in 1996 and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Central Florida in 1993. He relocated to the Halifax Regional Municipality in 2012 and has been licensed as a lawyer in Nova Scotia since 2014, where his practice covers cross-border and domestic business and tax law, commercial and tax litigation, corporate transactions, real estate litigation, and appellate advocacy. He previously taught constitutional and international law at the University of Central Florida and later taught commercial law as an adjunct professor at Saint Mary's University in Halifax. He has appeared as a legal commentator on national and international media outlets and is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, the Florida Bar, and the District of Columbia Bar.
