About David
The Honourable David Doherty, K.C., is Counsel at Lenczner Slaght after serving as the longest-tenured judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the second-longest-serving appellate judge in Canadian history. Over his 33-year tenure he heard more than 6,000 civil and criminal appeals, with decisions cited across appellate courts in Canada including the Supreme Court of Canada. His rulings have touched at least 49 areas of civil law, from privacy and oppression to abuse of process and enforcement of foreign judgments, alongside his well-known contributions to criminal law. Before the bench, he worked as Crown Counsel and in private practice, prosecuting complex commercial frauds and defending medical malpractice and commercial disputes. At the firm, he now serves as a mentor and advisor to colleagues and clients and sits as an arbitrator and mediator on the roster at Arbitration Place. He earned his LLB from Western University in 1973 and his honours B.A. from McGill University, and was called to the Ontario bar in 1975.
