About Darrell
Darrell has practised insurance defence litigation since being called to the Ontario bar in 1990, representing insurers in matters before every level of court in the province, including jury and non-jury trials, and before administrative tribunals. Over his career he has conducted numerous trials before the Superior Court of Justice and completed roughly 100 to 125 tribunal arbitrations that resulted in reported decisions. In Pires v. Zurich, argued at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, he helped establish the standard governing an insured's repayment of benefits to an insurer, and in Athanasiadis v. Zurich he secured one of the first cost awards in an insurer's favour at that tribunal. His practice covers bodily injury defence, construction and professional liability litigation, coverage disputes, accident benefits and LAT matters, subrogation, and employment litigation. He holds an LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School, an LL.B. from the University of Windsor, and a B.A. from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
