About Caroline Mercer

Caroline Mercer handles complex commercial litigation and other dispute resolution work as a Toronto associate in Gowling WLG's Advocacy Department. Called to the Ontario bar in 2025, Caroline works with clients in both English and French. In February 2025 Caroline co-wrote a review of the 2024 amendments to Ontario's Conservation Authorities Act with Gowling WLG partner Jennifer L. King and associate Stacy Porter.

Law came after a first career in journalism and marketing. Caroline earned a cum laude JD at the University of Ottawa, taking its Option in Law and Technology, and the technology thread ran through those years: an internship at the Samuelson Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, plus work as a research assistant on a project about how the law should govern artificial intelligence used in health care. There was also a semester of study abroad, at the University of Glasgow.

The road there started in Halifax, where Caroline studied psychology and contemporary studies at the University of King's College. Four months in Madagascar's Morondava region followed, as an intern with the World Wide Fund for Nature, recording how people in a fishing community saw environmental change. Two years as a copywriter at a Toronto advertising agency came next. Caroline's copywriting clients at Gale, a digital marketing firm, included BMW and SodaStream.

At Carleton University's Master of Journalism program, Caroline won the 2018 Political Reporting Award, with the $2,000 prize meant for a project documenting how genomics studies leave out participants by design, most often minorities, with a trip planned to northern British Columbia to report on UBC's Silent Genomics project. Later roles included audience engagement editor, writer and researcher at The Logic, and Caroline's bylines have appeared in CMAJ News and Yale Medicine Magazine.
