About Alexander Camenzind

Alexander Camenzind is a partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office and works as both a lawyer and a registered Canadian patent agent. Patents sit at the centre of it all. Alexander fights over them in court, mostly on questions of infringement and validity, and also files them, along with industrial designs, for clients in Canada and abroad. Those clients run from start-ups and smaller businesses making their very first IP filing to multinationals with large portfolios that need steady oversight.

Science came before law. Alexander holds a biochemistry and microbiology degree from the University of Victoria and, before joining Gowling WLG, worked as a researcher in UVic's biochemistry department, building new mass spectrometry methods for measuring protein and peptide biomarkers with scientists from across the country. Alexander's law degree is from the University of Alberta, with a call to the Ontario bar in 2017 and qualification as a Canadian patent agent in 2021.

Alexander's files cover a wide spread of industries. Pharmaceutical clients, with both small molecule and biologic products, sit alongside companies in the life sciences, chemicals, oil and gas, and health and lifestyle products. The technology can be anything from a manufacturing process or a research technique to technical software or food processing.

Courtroom experience shapes the filing side, too. Alexander appears as trial counsel in the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Ontario courts, and drafts applications with the goal that the rights will stand up if they're ever enforced or attacked. Clients who also deal with Health Canada get help there, from patent listing to challenging an unfavourable regulatory decision.
