Singer Kwinter is a Toronto personal injury firm founded in 1974, when Alfred M. Kwinter and Morris Singer, then classmates, opened the practice together. The firm has kept both founders' names ever since, and Kwinter still practises there as founding partner more than five decades later. From an office on Bay Street, the firm represents plaintiffs in personal injury, long term disability, property loss, and insurance claim disputes, arguing cases up to the Supreme Court of Canada.
The firm's history includes some of the largest jury awards for punitive damages against insurers in Canadian legal history. Singer Kwinter is the only law firm in Canada to have won punitive damages against an insurer on four separate occasions, including a $2,500,000 verdict in Pereira v. Hamilton Township Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and a $350,000 award in Plester v. Wawanesa that still stands as the highest punitive award against an insurer upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal. Kwinter also argued Oldfield v. Transamerica Insurance Company, a landmark decision at the Supreme Court of Canada. Today the firm's five lawyers, called to the Ontario bar between 1972 and 2022, serve clients in ten languages, including Arabic, Mandarin, and Yiddish.
