About Hodder, Wang LLP

Hodder, Wang LLP is a downtown Toronto firm formed by combining two established practices, one built by Gary Hodder and the other by Yan Wang. Wang was called to the Ontario Bar in 2008 and built a practice in commercial and litigation matters; Wang now serves as managing partner. Hodder was called to the Bar in 1985 and was certified as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Ontario (then the Law Society of Upper Canada) in 1996, and serves as senior litigation counsel. Before law, Hodder worked as a journalist and completed graduate studies in literature at the University of Pennsylvania, after a first degree at Harvard.

The firm's work spans civil litigation, arbitration and mediation, real estate and property, commercial transactions, cross-border business investments, and corporate governance, with matters argued at every level of the Ontario courts up to the Supreme Court of Canada. Hodder was counsel of record for the respondent, Hassan Rasouli, in Cuthbertson v. Rasouli, the 2013 Supreme Court of Canada decision on consent to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. The firm serves clients in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and Wang belongs to the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, and the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers.

The neighbourhood

The firm's office is in Suite 1120 at 130 Queens Quay East, on Toronto's central waterfront. The building is part of Daniels Waterfront, City of the Arts, a mixed-use development the Daniels Corporation describes as sitting at the gateway to the East Bayfront with views over Lake Ontario, combining office, retail, residential, and cultural space. The suite itself was fitted out in a 2019 renovation with full height glass partitions and a reception area that looks out over the lake and the skyline, a setting suited to a firm that meets clients on transactional as well as litigation matters.

Queens Quay East sits within walking distance of Union Station and the St. Lawrence Market, putting the office close to the courthouses and financial district the firm's litigation and transactional work regularly touches, without being built around any one of them.
