Delex LLP is a small Toronto firm built around two partners, Brendan D. Peters and Sohaib M. Habib, working out of an office on John Street in the city's downtown core. Both hold a JD from Dalhousie University, class of 2019, and were called to the Ontario bar in 2020. Each also came in with a graduate science degree before turning to law, and the firm's own description of its work, blockchain, fintech, intellectual property, and complex litigation involving emerging technology including artificial intelligence, follows from that combination.
The day to day work centres on cryptocurrency and digital asset disputes: tracing and recovering funds lost to rug pulls, pig-butchering scams, and other crypto fraud, plus token launch and DAO regulatory questions, NFT and art law disputes, and commercial technology litigation. Habib was the first lawyer in Canada to serve defendants by way of an NFT airdrop and wrote a LexisNexis book on the legal and policy issues around NFTs. Peters has litigated in the Federal Courts, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and, through a Nova Scotia Bar admission, in Nova Scotia's courts too. Consultations start at $300 an hour plus HST, and the firm is set up to accept payment in cryptocurrency.
HourlyDelex LLP's office is on John Street in downtown Toronto. The firm's art law page describes its client base as drawn from the city's art, design, and digital innovation sectors, and that client mix lines up with a practice that advises artists, designers, and galleries on copyright and NFT questions alongside its cryptocurrency and technology litigation work. It's a small, two-lawyer operation rather than a firm with deep local roots in one neighbourhood; the practice is built around clients doing business online and across jurisdictions more than around a single downtown institution.
