Baker & Company is a small law firm in Toronto's financial district, at 130 Adelaide Street West. Mark G. Baker founded the firm in 1989 to build a small team of business minded lawyers who could support owners and managers of privately held companies. Baker was called to the Ontario bar in 1981, holds an LL.M. from Cornell University, and is a Law Society of Ontario Certified Specialist in Corporate and Commercial Law. Baker has advised presidents and senior managers of more than 400 private companies. Counsel David Hamilton was also called to the Ontario bar in 1981, and counsel Eric Kay was called to the Ontario bar in 1983. Associate Liana Rossi, called in 2014, joined the firm in January 2016.
The firm's practice spans corporate and commercial law, real estate, employment law, wills and estates, and expropriation law, where it represents property and business owners rather than government authorities. One niche sets it apart: hotel law. Baker & Company says it is one of relatively few Ontario firms with a dedicated hotel law practice, advising owners on financing acquisitions, franchise agreements and property improvement plans. It also runs a Doing Business in Canada practice for foreign companies entering the market, and it has advised companies seeking to do business in Canada for more than 30 years. The firm represents more than 400 active Canadian companies overall. The firm pairs senior lawyers with law clerks on files to help manage cost.
Wheelchair accessible
By appointmentThe firm's office is on Adelaide Street West, in a highrise at 130 Adelaide, Suite 2101, in the heart of Toronto's financial district. Baker & Company describes the spot as within a stone's throw of City Hall, the courts, most provincial government offices, and many of the larger law firms it deals with on files.
For a firm whose practice includes expropriation law, that provincial government proximity is more than a convenience: expropriating authorities are government bodies, and clients fighting an expropriation are often negotiating with agencies just blocks away. The same downtown core is where much of the corporate, real estate and hospitality work the firm's other practice areas serve gets done.
