About Allen & Malek LLP

Allen & Malek LLP is a small law firm in downtown Toronto focused on estate and business law. William Allen, known as Bill, opened the practice in 1985 at age 57 after about seventeen years at Lang Michener, following an earlier career practicing with family members Jack Allen and John Bamber Allen (who later became a Provincial Court Judge in Orangeville). The firm operated as Allen & Allen for 35 years before reorganizing on October 15, 2020 as Allen & Malek LLP, a limited liability partnership. Current partner John Allen joined the practice in 1992, extending the firm's family history into a second generation.

John Allen was called to the Ontario bar in 1991 and later earned a Masters and PhD in law from Osgoode Hall Law School while working full time at the firm. John Allen was a Certified Financial Planner and is a part-time deputy judge of the Ontario Small Claims Court. Partner Adam Malek studied philosophy at Bishop's University before a Juris Doctor at the University of Manitoba and practices estate, business, and employment law. Both partners have contributed chapters to the Estate Planning Handbook and to How to Administer an Estate in Ontario, and the firm describes a commitment to plain language documents and next business day responses to calls and emails.

The neighbourhood

The firm's office at 350 Wellington Street West, Suite 205, sits in downtown Toronto just east of the Fashion District. Wikipedia describes the Fashion District as roughly bounded by Bathurst Street, Spadina Avenue, Queen Street West, and Front Street, a name it takes from the garment factories and textile warehouses that filled the area in the early twentieth century. The office itself sits outside those boundaries, in the surrounding mix of downtown offices, condominiums, and restaurants near Spadina Avenue and Blue Jays Way.
