Ross & McBride LLP is Hamilton's largest and oldest law firm, tracing its name to two of the city's early lawyers. William Leaper Ross was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1890, was later appointed King's Counsel, and founded a succession of Hamilton firms, including Carscallen, Cahill & Ross and Ross & Flett. Robert Pickard McBride was called to the Ontario Bar in 1912, was later appointed Queen's Counsel, and practiced through firms including Peat & McBride and McBride, Hickey, McCallum & Mann. Today the firm carrying both their names is headquartered in downtown Hamilton at 1 King St W and practices in 12 areas of law, from personal injury, litigation, and family law to business, real estate, wills and estates, human rights, and criminal defence.
The labour and employment group works both sides of the table, representing unionized and non-unionized employers as well as individual employees in wrongful dismissal, human rights, and workplace disputes. Clients span municipalities and financial institutions as well as small businesses, nonprofits, and families. In April 2026, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce presented Ross & McBride with its Century Award, marking more than 130 years of service to the city. The firm is also a member of the Law Firm Diversity & Inclusion Network and was the first law firm in the Hamilton region to sign the network's Statement of Principles.
