Canadian banks and private lenders regularly bring Thomas Gertner in when a loan runs into trouble and has to be enforced or worked out. Gertner has also completed secondments at a national captive finance company and in the legal department of a Schedule I bank's auto finance group. Gertner helps lenders look over, build and launch retail credit programs in Canada.

Insolvency sits at the centre of a broader commercial practice. Restructurings are a big part of it, whether they're agreed or fought, run through court under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act or the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, or handled as informal workouts, and lenders, debtors and other stakeholders all rely on that advice. Gertner is a partner in the Toronto office of Gowling WLG and part of its Financial Institutions & Services Group.

Gertner writes about this area, too, contributing to the Chambers guide Insolvency Law and Practice in Canada and co-authoring a Lexpert piece with colleague David Cohen on digital currencies in commercial lending. The Best Lawyers in Canada recognizes Gertner for Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law. Called to the Ontario bar in 2015, Gertner came through the joint program that pairs a JD from Osgoode Hall Law School with an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.
