About Sylvain

Sylvain Roy is the founder and principal of SRA, a Montreal-based practice combining business and intellectual property law with technology venture experience and IP valuation. Licensed to practise in Quebec since 1994, Roy established the practice in 1999 after co-founding a venture-backed robotics software company, serving as chief operating officer and raising capital as early as 1996. Roy's practice covers business and technology law, with particular depth in intellectual property valuation, complex regulatory frameworks, and cross-border transactions, and Roy has completed over 200 IP valuation projects, including multinational patent portfolio assessments for transfer pricing compliance. Roy also founded an IP brokerage firm in Switzerland serving clients including ABB, Legrand and Schneider Electric, and has advised organizations such as CERN and EPFL on turning academic research into commercial value. Roy is a co-editor and contributing author of Business Secrets Management (Springer Nature, 2025) and lectures on IP valuation at CEIPI (Université de Strasbourg). Roy holds the Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) designation and works in French and English.
