He earned a BA Honours in Law from the University of Durham, England in 1977, was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1978, and completed an LLM at the University of Alberta in 1979 before being called to the Alberta Bar in 1980. He maintains an extensive environmental law practice acting for landowners concerned about energy and utility projects and has appeared in more than 125 administrative and court hearings, including before the Alberta Energy Regulator, the National Energy Board, and the Supreme Court of Canada. His work also includes professional malpractice defence and advising First Nations governments on oil and gas matters. He was recognized as a leading environmental law practitioner by Lexpert in 2000 and named among Canada's Best Environmental Lawyers by the National Post in 2007.
