M&A, corporate commercial matters and private equity, with a particular focus on the tech sector, make up Michelle Kumar's work for business owners and companies buying, selling or combining with another business. Kumar is an associate in Gowling WLG's Waterloo Region office. Recent files show the range: acting for Precision Biomonitoring when NatureMetrics bought its environmental DNA business in 2022, for the buyers of Waterloo's K-W Glass Systems in 2023, for Farm Health Guardian in its cross-border merger with NoveTechnologies, and on Senske Services' 2024 purchase of Nutri-Lawn and Mosquito.buzz. In 2022 Kumar also co-wrote the Canadian joint ventures chapter for Lexology Getting the Deal Through.

Kumar's degrees start in social work: a Bachelor of Social Work at York, graduating on the Dean's List, and a Master of Social Work at Western. Kumar also belongs to the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and has volunteered at the Military Veterans' Law Clinic in Detroit, helping war veterans get government benefits. A JD cum laude from the University of Windsor and University of Detroit Mercy law schools came next.

There's courtroom grounding behind the deal work. Kumar clerked for the Hon. Judge Mark McConnell at Michigan's 18th District Court and shadowed Justice Trotter of the Ontario Court of Appeal and Justice King of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Called to the Ontario bar in 2020, Kumar trained through summer and articling terms at a full-service Bay Street firm, then moved to a busy Waterloo practice, where Kumar helped clients sell and acquire businesses, restructure their companies, settle shareholder and partnership agreements and work through a wide spread of general corporate questions, before joining Gowling WLG.
