About Michael
Michael J. Fortier is a partner advising and negotiating on environmental law and Indigenous matters, from project development and transactions to regulatory issues and dispute resolution. He counsels clients on the environmental, Indigenous, and strategic dimensions of developing, permitting, and building energy, infrastructure, mining, and real estate projects, and guides negotiations with Indigenous communities and regulators, including on consultation, accommodation, and free, prior and informed consent. His dispute work spans approval hearings, contamination litigation, mediation, and regulatory prosecutions under statutes such as the Environmental Protection Act, the Fisheries Act, and the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. Michael also helps buyers, sellers, lenders, and investors manage the environmental and Indigenous aspects of transactions. He completed the Advanced Mediation Workshop at Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation and previously chaired the OBA's Aboriginal Law and Environmental Law sections.
