Niven has been court-appointed mineral owners' representative in Gross Royalty Trust litigation since 1989 and has represented landowner groups before the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and the Alberta Utilities Commission on major transmission line and pipeline projects. Niven founded the national board of the Canadian Stuttering Association and served on the Federal Judiciary Advisory Committee for Alberta from 2008 to 2011. Called to the Scottish Bar in 1980 and the Alberta Bar in 1983, Niven was appointed King's Counsel in 2006 and received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
