About John

John Raftery grew up in Northern Ontario and earned an Honours B.A. in English Literature from the University of Toronto before studying law at Queen's University, graduating in 1983. He was called to the bar in 1985 and began his career as a Crown prosecutor before opening his own defence practice at 551 Gerrard Street East. His work now takes him across Southern and Northern Ontario, and his trial experience includes homicide cases along with numerous assault, fraud, DUI, and drug-related matters. Before turning to law, John represented Canada in international boxing, winning bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup of Boxing. He has presented on criminal law topics for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Advocates' Society, and Crown Attorneys' education sessions, and he is a member of Legal Aid Ontario's panels for Extremely Serious Criminal Matters and Gladue Court.
