About John

John J. Tobin is a partner at Torys focusing on tax law, with clients that include many of Canada's biggest companies and financial institutions. His work spans transactional matters, tax planning, and tax controversy and transfer pricing disputes, covering federal and provincial income tax as well as sales, use, and harmonized sales taxes. He has advised multinational and Canadian organizations in both the private and public sectors on tax structuring, international transactions, corporate financings, derivative products, securitizations, and M&A deals, along with cross-border work touching infrastructure, energy projects in wind, solar, and hydro power, and public-private partnerships. He currently serves the Canadian Tax Foundation as a governor and holds a director position with the International Fiscal Association's Canada Branch. He previously chaired the board at Michael Garron Hospital, formerly called Toronto East General Hospital, and has taught as adjunct faculty at Osgoode Hall Law School, having served as president of its alumni association from 2009 to 2012.
