About John
John Fitzmaurice holds a BA in English Literature (York, 1977), an MA in Social and Political Thought (York, 1979), and an LLB (University of Toronto, 1982), and was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1984. He has practised criminal law since then, appearing before all levels of court including the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada, and has been counsel in several precedent-setting cases, including R. v. Grant (2009 SCC 32), the leading case on exclusion of evidence under the Charter, and R. v. Harris (2007 ONCA 574), on roadside investigative stops. In 2015 he brought a successful Superior Court application challenging illegal police entries in Muskoka, which drew national media coverage. He is a longstanding member of the Criminal Lawyers' Association and the York Law Association and sits on the Ontario Legal Aid Plan's Complex Case Panel.
