About Neill
Neill Fitzmaurice earned a BA (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of Toronto in 2014 and his law degree from the University of Toronto in 2019, having worked with Innocence Canada before and during law school. Called to the bar in 2020, he focuses on complex cases including murder and criminal negligence causing death, with a particular interest in unlawful searches and the right to counsel. In R. v. Z (2021), he and John Fitzmaurice had five confessions from a 'Mr. Big' undercover operation excluded at a preliminary inquiry, believed to be the first such exclusion at that stage, after which the murder charge was stayed. He also appeared as junior counsel to Philip Campbell before the Supreme Court of Canada in R. v. R.V. (2021 SCC 10), the leading decision on remedies for inconsistent jury verdicts.
