About John
John Fennel has practiced as a lawyer since 2006, taking cases before both juries and judges. He began his career in Massachusetts, handling trials and appeals in state court, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2015, where he continues to litigate at trial and on appeal. His practice centers on cases involving expert evidence; he has succeeded in keeping breathalyzer results out of evidence and has persuaded juries to reject predictions about future recidivism. He also argued an appellate case in Massachusetts that led to major revisions to jury instructions on eyewitness identification, drawing on scientific research into how memory works. Fennel earned a B.S. in physics from James Madison University in 1993 and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Georgia in 1999, later teaching philosophy before attending the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his J.D. in 2006. He has written on forensic mental health topics and search and seizure law.
