About Jana

Jana McLean is the principal and founding lawyer of Iris Legal, a Vancouver firm specializing in environmental, natural resources, and Indigenous law. She has more than two decades of litigation and regulatory experience, advising on contaminated sites, water and fisheries law, forestry law, environmental assessments, and compliance and enforcement matters, as well as Aboriginal rights and title, Indian band governance, and the duty to consult. She was lead counsel for nine Stó:lō Nation communities in their successful Federal Court of Appeal challenge to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, and represented the successful plaintiff in a $4.75 million contaminated sites case, the largest award of its kind under BC's Environmental Management Act. Before founding Iris Legal, Jana spent most of her career at a major national firm and clerked at the BC Court of Appeal. She holds an LL.M. (First Class) from the University of Cambridge, an LL.B. from the University of Victoria, and a BA (Hons) from Queen's University, and is a member of the Law Society of BC and the Law Society of Yukon.
