About Ian

Ian Breneman is a partner and commercial litigator whose practice covers business disputes, transportation and logistics, and maritime law. He takes a pragmatic, business-minded approach to resolving clients' legal problems and appears as counsel in litigation and arbitrations touching cargo, warehousing, casualty, construction, and contract disputes across maritime and other transportation modes. He helps shippers, intermediaries, and carriers negotiate transportation contracts and advises on regulatory compliance, customs, and tariff issues, and he also defends manufacturers and distributors in product liability cases, including guiding clients through recalls. His work extends into the energy sector, representing midstream and oilfield services companies, and into insolvency and business disputes touching banking, securities, and municipal law. He has appeared before courts in Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and the Federal Court, and has litigated across every Canadian common law province. Before joining the firm, he practiced in Calgary and, earlier, at a regional firm in Halifax, where he clerked at the Federal Court after articling. He volunteers with Pro Bono Ontario, sits on a charity's board, and has provided pro bono counsel to refugee claimants, and he lives in Peterborough, Ontario, where he enjoys trail running and time on the water with his family.
