The Honourable Ian Binnie, C.C., K.C. serves as Of Counsel to Lenczner Slaght. He spent nearly 14 years as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, retiring from the bench in 2011 after authoring more than 170 opinions on subjects ranging from corporate and commercial disputes to aboriginal rights, patents, and constitutional law. He now works as a mediator and arbitrator and advises the firm's lawyers and clients, drawing on three decades of courtroom experience before joining the bench. Earlier in his career he served four years as Canada's Associate Deputy Minister of Justice and as Special Parliamentary Counsel to the joint Senate-Commons committee on the Meech Lake Accord. He has appeared before the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals, and he was called to the bar in Ontario in 1967 and in England in 1966. His education includes an LLM from the University of Cambridge, an LLB from the University of Toronto, an earlier LLB from Cambridge, and a BA from McGill University.
