About Eric Hendry

Eric Hendry is a Toronto tax lawyer at Gowling WLG, working on questions of both Canadian domestic and international tax. Clients in Canada and abroad come to Eric for the tax side of mergers and acquisitions, private equity deals, tax-exempt organizations and inbound investment by non-residents. When a client ends up at odds with the Canada Revenue Agency, Eric also helps them through it, whether the matter sits at audit, at objection or in litigation.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2018, Eric began at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, first as a summer student in 2015, then articling, and then as a tax associate from 2018 to 2021. From 2021 to 2024 Eric worked for the federal Department of Finance as a tax policy officer, helping draft international tax legislation on withholding taxes and on how digital services are taxed. Eric then came to Gowling WLG, where Eric is an associate in the Business Law Department.

Digital services taxation is a topic Eric speaks on beyond Canada. In January 2025 Eric was the Canadian speaker on an IFA Canada webinar that compared the digital services tax rules of Canada, Austria and the United Kingdom, and Eric is listed among the speakers and moderators for the Amsterdam Centre for Tax Law's September 2025 conference on digital service taxes. Eric has also written for estate planners: a May 2026 post on the All About Estates blog explains how treaty tie-breaker rules work when two countries each treat the same person as a tax resident.

A McGill law graduate who has added tax courses from the Canadian Bar Association and CPA Canada, Eric works in English and French.
