Indigenous LawDerek's practice focuses on working with Indigenous Peoples in Aboriginal, commercial and environmental law, serving Indigenous governments, businesses, and financial institutions across Atlantic Canada. He advises on consultation and negotiations for energy and resource projects, treaty implementation and self-government negotiations, and taxation and land management. Derek has appeared in the courts of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, and in Federal Court, on Aboriginal and treaty rights and environmental protection matters. He studied business at Wilfrid Laurier University, law at the University of Victoria, and Indigenous law at Victoria University Wellington in New Zealand. Derek serves on the Law Society of New Brunswick's Truth and Reconciliation Committee and is a past chair of the CBA's National Aboriginal Law Section.
