Born in the Northwest Territories and raised in Southern Ontario, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Italian Language at the University of King's College before her JD at the University of Victoria. She is a member of the Law Society of BC, the CBA Wills, Estates and Trusts Section, and the Women's Lawyers Forum, and was a contributing author to the Family Law Sourcebook for British Columbia and the CLEBC Family Practice Manual.
