About Burtley

Burtley Francis acts for clients ranging from owner-managed businesses to larger private and public companies in industries including telecommunications, manufacturing, information technology, and entertainment. His work has included the acquisition by Sobeys of Canada Safeway's assets for roughly $5.8 billion and a sale-leaseback transaction between Sobeys and Crombie REIT involving about $990 million in proceeds. He also advises on corporate restructuring, business acquisitions and sales, commercial financing, and regulatory compliance for advertising and marketing campaigns. Francis co-chairs the firm's students committee and serves on its diversity and inclusion committee. He holds an LL.B. from Dalhousie University (2007) and a B.Sc. (honours) from the University of Ottawa (2004), and was named King's Counsel in 2024.
