About Broadhurst & Kooy

Broadhurst & Kooy is a Vancouver law firm whose lawyers practice exclusively in family law, covering cohabitation and marriage agreements, litigation, mediation, arbitration, and parenting coordination. Partners Joe Broadhurst and Michelle Kooy were both called to the British Columbia bar in 2009. Broadhurst studied political science and philosophy at the University of Toronto, then earned a law degree at the University of British Columbia in 2008, and has since represented clients in BC's Provincial Court, Supreme Court, and Court of Appeal. Kooy grew up in Abbotsford, earned an LLB from the University of Alberta in 2008, and started an exclusive family law practice in 2010 after articling with a Vancouver securities firm. The two built the firm into a team of associate lawyers and counsel.

Broadhurst & Kooy doesn't push every file toward court. Its lawyers offer collaborative practice, mediation, and single issue arbitration alongside litigation, and several lawyers at the firm, including Michelle Kooy, are accredited Family Law Mediators. The firm also takes on high net worth divorces involving corporate and trust assets, and offers flat rate pricing on marriage agreements and uncontested divorces alongside hourly billing. The office is in the Electra, a 1957 tower at 970 Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver built as headquarters for the BC Electric Company; the firm has been there since relocating to its current space, effective August 27, 2021.
