Platform Law is a corporate and commercial practice in Toronto, founded in 2018. It isn't set up as a traditional partnership: its three lawyers describe themselves as independent corporate and commercial lawyers practicing in association, each solely responsible for the work they do rather than sharing liability with the others. The firm advises founders, startups, boards and growth-stage companies on corporate structuring, governance, shareholder agreements, commercial contracts, financings and mergers and acquisitions, with particular attention to entertainment, media and technology clients.
All three lawyers spent time on Bay Street or in a corporate firm before moving in-house, and the firm points to that mix of private practice and in-house experience as the basis for its advice. Sam Posner spent more than eight years in-house with a multinational media company before starting the firm and focuses on media and technology clients. Eli Cranley began a career at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, then spent several years as in-house counsel, including as General Counsel, with a recent focus on the manufacturing sector. Dan Bank has more than fifteen years advising on mergers and acquisitions, financings, commercial leasing, real estate and commercial contracts, and also works on Canadian partnership structures for Latin American companies and families for tax and estate planning purposes.
The office is on the second floor of 1920 Yonge Street, right beside Davisville subway station in the Davisville Village section of midtown Toronto. It's a dense stretch of the Yonge corridor between St. Clair and Eglinton avenues, lined mostly with office and condo towers.
That puts the firm a short subway ride up the line from Bay Street, where the firm says its lawyers cut their teeth before moving in-house and, eventually, into practicing on their own out of a midtown office.
