About Method Law Professional Corporation

Method Law Professional Corporation is a small Toronto firm that practices exclusively in intellectual property law. Michelle Wassenaar founded the firm in 2012 after being called to the Ontario Bar in 1994, and it has since grown to include lawyers and registered patent and trademark agents working from an office on Yonge Street. The firm handles patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs and plant breeders' rights for clients that range from multinational corporations to Canadian start-ups, charities and individuals.

Method Law's lawyers have appeared before the Trademarks Opposition Board and the Patent Appeal Board, at both levels of the Federal Court, and in Ontario courts, and the firm has represented clients in domain name disputes before WIPO and the Forum. Since Canada joined the Madrid Protocol in 2019, the firm has also acted as a designated Canadian agent for foreign trademark filings. Wassenaar was named to the WTR 1000, World Trademark Review's directory of trademark professionals, in the 2021 edition, in the enforcement and litigation category for Canada.

The neighbourhood

Method Law's office is at 4211 Yonge Street, Suite 310, in Toronto. It is a small office, and the firm's own local ties run through community life rather than a courthouse or a transit line, which fits a practice that files with federal boards and courts rather than appearing in local disputes. Wassenaar has volunteered with the neighbourhood's York Mills Valley Fair and sung at Christmas morning services at the North York Seniors Centre, and has belonged to Verity, a women's business and social club in downtown Toronto, since 2004.
