About Dr. Lwam Ghebrehariat

Dr. Lwam Ghebrehariat runs a solo Toronto practice built on two separate professional credentials: a law degree and a psychiatry specialty. Ghebrehariat trained first at Canada's National Theatre School in Montreal (2003), then earned a BA with First Class Honours in philosophy from the University of Alberta (2007), a JD from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (2011), and an MD from McMaster University (2017), later completing a psychiatry residency at the University of Toronto. Ghebrehariat was called to the bar in Ontario in 2012 and in Alberta in 2017, and holds a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada along with an independent practice license in psychiatry granted in Ontario in 2022.

The practice, based on King Street West in downtown Toronto, pairs legal advice and representation with psychotherapy and independent medical and psychiatric evaluations, drawing on both credentials in the same case. Legal work covers criminal defence, mental health law, labour and employment law, human rights law, immigration, family law, personal injury and disability matters, areas where a psychiatric assessment and a legal claim often overlap. Before residency, Ghebrehariat articled at Cavalluzzo Hayes Shilton McIntyre & Cornish LLP and worked as criminal duty counsel with Legal Aid Ontario. Services are offered in English, French, Spanish and Tigrinya.
