The neighbourhood
Barmania Lawyers is one of the office tenants of Berkeley Castle. The ground it stands on was originally part of Toronto Bay, and Berkeley Street, which ended there, was the eastern edge of York's original 1793 town site. In 1842 the property was orchard land sitting right at the water's edge.
Joseph Simpson, whose company dated to the early 1860s, put up the first building on the site in 1868, and it became Toronto's first knitting factory. Later, when ownership changed hands repeatedly and the buildings served as low income housing and workshops, people started calling it "the castle". A.J. Diamond bought the property meaning to turn it into homes, but a 1981 compromise granted commercial zoning instead. The renovation that followed ran from January 1982 to June 1983, with plans for offices on the upper floors, retail at ground level and a quiet courtyard where the yard's sheds had been.
