About Themis Law & Mediation

Themis Law & Mediation is a family law and mediation firm based in Ottawa, working across Cornwall, Pembroke, and the Ottawa Valley. The firm takes its name from Themis, the Greek goddess of justice, fairness, and law, a choice meant to signal a firm, fair, and steady approach to family disputes. Most of the practice runs virtually, through videoconferencing, phone calls, and email, with in person meetings available by appointment at a downtown Ottawa office.

The two lawyers combine legal representation with mediation, conflict coaching, and unbundled services for clients who want help with only part of their case. Joanne Roulston, a lawyer, accredited mediator (ADRIO), and registered social worker, spent years as a federal government executive and still teaches part time as a professor of social work at Carleton University, alongside a long record of work on family and children's policy and income security. Karen Farnsworth, a lawyer and mediator, is a Royal Canadian Navy veteran and a certified Gladue writer with experience in Indigenous legal matters, and brings a military family's perspective to pension and benefits questions.
