About Yavar
Yavar Hameed focuses his practice on human rights advocacy, including administrative law, civil litigation, employment law, and prisoner rights. He works to help clients understand their rights and navigate complex legal and social challenges, with experience in police accountability cases, whistleblower protection, and defending individuals targeted during the so-called War on Terror. Over more than two decades he has litigated cases addressing Anti-Palestinian Racism and advocated for prisoners' rights, and he also advises community organizations and grassroots networks facing unconstitutional restrictions. For fifteen years he taught a seminar on human rights at Carleton University's Department of Law and Legal Studies, focusing on the ideological persecution of dissent by the state. He produced a short documentary film in 2020 examining the limits of law in building social change. Hameed was called to the Ontario Bar in 2001 and holds an LLB from the University of Ottawa (1999) and an MA from Carleton University's Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (2001).
