About Urszula

Urszula Wojtyra is a Principal at Smart & Biggar's Toronto office, where she represents innovative pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies in patent litigation. Her technical background in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and genetics helps her explain complex inventions clearly to courts. She regularly handles patent infringement and validity actions, including proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations, before the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal of Canada, and was part of the team that represented AstraZeneca in its patent litigation against Apotex over omeprazole. Urszula also advises clients on regulatory due diligence, compliance, data protection, and patent listing matters. Before law school she earned a Master of Science in biochemistry from the University of Toronto and worked in an immunology research lab at the Hospital for Sick Children. She was called to the Ontario bar in 2008 and holds a J.D. from the University of Toronto and a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of Guelph.
