Defence Lawyer (independent, Scholten Criminal Defence, in association with Muenz Criminal Law) at Muenz Criminal Law
Thomas Scholten operates his own law firm, Scholten Criminal Defence, in association with Muenz Criminal Law, and the two lawyers regularly consult each other to give clients the benefit of their combined experience. His practice includes running criminal trials, negotiating early case resolutions, diverting matters to alternative measures, appealing immediate roadside sanctions, and combatting traffic tickets, with appearances in Provincial Court, Youth and Family Court, the Court of King's Bench, and before the SafeRoads administrative body. As a Dutch-Canadian, he is attentive to the added consequences immigrants can face from a criminal conviction, along with the experiences of Indigenous peoples and Canada's diverse communities. During law school he volunteered as a caseworker with Student Legal Assistance and competed internationally in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot, winning awards for best written and best respondent submissions in 2021. Scholten holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Anthropology from Mount Royal University. He is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association.
