Born and raised in Eritrea, he earned his Bachelor of Laws with Distinction from the University of Asmara in 2002, then came to Canada on a scholarship and completed a Master of Laws at Dalhousie University in 2005. After facing barriers getting his credentials recognized in Canada, he completed the Immigration Practitioner Program at Humber College in 2009 and became a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant, spending more than 15 years assisting applicants with permanent residency, private refugee sponsorships, and family class sponsorships, and representing clients before the Immigration and Refugee Board in refugee claims and sponsorship appeals. He completed the Foreign Trained Lawyers Program at the University of Calgary in 2022-2023, articled from 2024 to 2025, and was called to the Bar in Alberta in August 2025, establishing his professional corporation operating as Tefancy Law. He speaks Tigrinya and Amharic in addition to English.
