About Susan
Susan Roothman has practised law since 1993, beginning her career in South Africa in family law, personal injury, medical malpractice, and general civil litigation, where she was the founding partner of Roothman & Roothman Attorneys in Cape Town. She immigrated to Canada in 2002 and now practises in British Columbia and the Yukon in partnership with André Roothman, with extensive litigation experience before the Supreme Court of Yukon and the Court of Appeal. She has served as legal counsel to the Yukon Human Rights Commission and represented a Yukon First Nation in several judicial review and inquest proceedings, including cases before the Yukon Court of Appeal. Her personal injury and medical malpractice work includes a case involving a migrating IUD that caused a client years of pain, and she has represented families of people who died in police and territorial custody at coroner's inquests and in subsequent wrongful death claims. She is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Law Society of Yukon, the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia, and the Canadian Bar Association, and was previously an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. Before her legal career, she held an academic research position in political science at the University of Stellenbosch and served as an officer, later Major, in the South African Defence Force Reserve Force.
