About Simon

Simon Trela was born in Poland and came to Canada in 1992 after spending three years in a refugee camp in Germany. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in German Literature from the University of Alberta in 2001, followed by his law degree from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2004, and was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2006. Trela practises predominantly in immigration law, covering temporary foreign workers, refugee law, deportation and removal matters, sponsorship appeals and judicial reviews before the Federal Court, and he also practises criminal law. He served as chair of the Citizenship and Immigration Section (Northern Alberta) from 2010 to 2012, has appeared on CTV News as a commentator, and teaches a seasonal course on sentencing and collateral immigration consequences at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law.
