About Richard

Richard Desgagnés is the Managing Director of Brisset Bishop, which Desgagnés joined in 2016 after heading the Canadian maritime and transportation practice, as well as the transnational litigation practice, of a leading international commercial law firm. Desgagnés's transportation practice covers most litigious and non-litigious aspects of the specialty, advising and representing shipowners, operators, charterers, shippers, freight forwarders, insurers, shipbuilders, ports and terminal operators, the Canadian government, banks and financiers, and aircraft manufacturers and their lenders. Desgagnés has appeared before all levels of court in Quebec, the Federal Courts of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as before private arbitration tribunals, and has coordinated transnational litigation in jurisdictions including Hong Kong, England, Jersey, France, Luxembourg and the United States. Desgagnés has also developed expertise in the execution of foreign judgments and arbitral awards and issues of state immunity, and practices in insurance coverage disputes and commercial contractual disputes. Desgagnés was called to the Quebec Bar in 1988, holds an LL.B. from the Université de Montréal (1986), and completed a Diploma in Shipping at the University of London (1988). Desgagnés is a director of the Canadian Maritime Law Association.
