About Paul

Paul Michell is a trial and appellate lawyer whose practice focuses on commercial litigation and arbitration, judicial review, and appellate matters, often with a regulatory or cross-border dimension. He has litigated cases involving failed hedge funds, derivatives, fraud, Ponzi schemes, arbitration-related court proceedings, shareholder disputes, construction and infrastructure, defamation, and employment law. Paul has appeared at all levels of the Ontario and Federal Courts and the Supreme Court of Canada, and before administrative and arbitral tribunals, and he has also served as an arbitrator and as a presiding officer under the Competition Act. His articles have been cited by courts including the Supreme Court of Canada, the High Court of Australia, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. He has been an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law since 2021. Paul was called to the Ontario bar in 1997 after clerking for Justice Charles Gonthier of the Supreme Court of Canada, and he holds a BCL from Oxford, an LLB from the University of Toronto, and a BA from McGill University.
