About Megan

Megan is a senior British Columbia lawyer with more than thirty years of experience in trial and appeal work, including appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada, and has advanced precedent-setting cases in both family law and civil claims for sexual abuse and assault. She was one of the first lawyers in Canada to devote a significant part of her practice to claims on behalf of adult survivors of sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse, drawing on earlier work in rape crisis centres. In 1992 she was co-counsel in the first Canadian case to hold that limitation periods should be extended to accommodate the challenges faced by sexual abuse victims, a case that led to amendments removing the limitation period for sexual abuse and assault victims under the BC Limitation Act. Over more than three decades she has represented clients pursuing claims against family members, neighbours, teachers, doctors, priests, associations, churches, and governments, and has advised estates in relation to claims against deceased persons. She was invited to sit on a select panel of senior family law lawyers consulted by the BC Ministry of the Attorney General on the development of the Family Law Act, and was admitted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers in 2014. Megan earned her LL.B. from the University of British Columbia between 1984 and 1987, was called to the bar in British Columbia in 1988, was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2008, and completed the ADR Institute of B.C. Arbitrator Training Course through Royal Roads University in 2020, becoming a Certified Family Law Arbitrator with the Law Society of British Columbia in 2021.
