Mark Phillips practices privacy law, civil litigation, charity and not-for-profit law, human rights law and administrative law. He represented a client in a right-to-be-forgotten complaint against Google's search engine that succeeded before the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, after earlier establishing at the Federal Court of Appeal that Google's search engine isn't exempt from Canada's private-sector privacy law. He also acted for a student union in an access-to-information dispute with UQAM, and represented the Canadian Journalism Collective in proceedings before the CRTC concerning funding distributed under the Online News Act. In another case, Phillips acted for a client in establishing that survivors of sexual assault need not prove specific harm through direct evidence to have their identity protected in civil proceedings. He serves as lead privacy counsel for Beanfield Technologies, a fibre internet provider, and has written on non-profit governance and privacy compliance for the Centre for Community Organizations.
