About Heather

Heather Gunter is a criminal defence lawyer whose science background gives her an edge in cases involving forensic, technological, and mental health evidence. She has a particular interest in youth justice, including appealing school expulsions under Ontario's Education Act, and in matters involving Not Criminally Responsible designations and the civil mental health system. Heather also represents victims of crime, helping clients pursue peace bonds and private prosecutions, and she advocates for Indigenous rights, having previously worked on projects addressing Indigenous water rights, treaty issues, and governance within a constitutional law framework. She has appeared before the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada. Heather holds a J.D. from the University of Ottawa (2021) and a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from McMaster University (2017), and she serves as an editor of the Canadian Rights Reporter.
